Situated in the middle
of the Taiwan Strait, Penghu consists of 64 islands
of different sizes. Because of the flat and seldom
varying terrain, the differences among creatures in
islands are less and natural resources are rather
limited. However, the complicated coastlines, and
the gigantic basalt columns and the specific
resources of fauna and flora
all promote Penghu into an international-class
tourism spot.Penghu is the stopover spot for
migrating birds. Spring and autumn are the seasons
when migratory birds arrive in Penghu. Every summer,
more than ten thousand terns breed on Cat Island.
Wangan Island is also famous for green turtles
laying eggs in the sand. Therefore, the government
designated "Seabird Reservation Area" and "Green
Turtle Egg Laying Habitat Reservation Area" to
protect terns and green turtles. Chishan Island,
Tingko Island, and Little Baisha Island are also
designated as "Basalt Natural Reservation Areas" for
the spectacular basalt scenery. In addition, the
specialties of the Penghu seashores, whales, flora
and precious ancient trees foster abundant natural
resources and history as well as increase the Penghu
vitality and impression. |
